My guess that one of the reasons Notepad++ is so responsive when editing text is it stays away from most, if not all, of the Microsoft IPC ‘du jour’ techniques, e.g., COM, Data Copy, DDE, File Mapping, Mailslots, Pipes, RPC, Windows Sockets.
